Country & Western Writers’ Centre
Four Roads, Glenamaddy, Co. Galway, Ireland

Media release – For immediate use – 1st April, 2005

The Board of Directors and Staff of the Country & Western Writers’ Centre based in Four Roads, Glenamaddy, County Galway are delighted today (Friday 1st April) at the announcement of startling new developments at the Centre. The Arts Council, An Comhairle Ealaion, has just announced that the Country & Westen Writers’s Centre will be the only writers’ centre in Co. Galway to receive funding in 2005.

Ms Freda Nic Eoinn, the Writer’s Centre Administrator, said, “We’re very happy to receive this money which is in recognition of our hard work lobbying the various members of the Arts Council over the last couple of weeks. Our methodology has been to stay quiet, fill in the application forms in Irish and Cant and then pray. It has paid off big time for us and it looks like I will have a job for life.”

The work of the Country & Western Writers’ Centre has been largely based around promoting the work of Ms Nic Eoinn and her partner Aprille Phoule. Prior to this announcement, the Country & Western Writers’ Centre has received support through its ongoing exchange programme with the University of Tennessee’s Merle Rider Haggard School of Penitentiary Lyricism. This Master’s programme has seen community activists from Sligo to Limerick travel to Nashville to explore the rhythmic possibilities which will come on stream with the expected re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor. The principal course tutor on this programme was renowned hobo Boxcar Willie.

“We would like to thank everyone who supported us in our quest for funding, “ said a delighted Ms Nic Eoinn, “We look forward to spending the money wisely as we continue to develop the Country and Western Writers’ Centre as a resource for everyone in the West, regardless of talent.”

NO SHOW!

Here's the scoop - no show this week because of a Cheltenham Preview by the Sports Dept.( I don't mean the Cheltenham Literary Festival either)

So - no review of 9 Songs or Eden and no preview of Claregalway Drama Festival or the new Catastrophe show.

We'll be back next week and in the meantime you can check out the programme for Cúirt coming up in about a month.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to ye all!!

Arts Show Friday 4th March

This week we look at a range of different things - if I get round to them:

Did you see the Horslips documentary on RTE earlier in the week - I might have to mention that for all the old farts like myself and play something off their Rollback album.

Marie Ni Rogain will be on to talk about Seachtain na Gaeilge which starts tomorrow.

Katie Moylan, our usual movie reviewer will be talking about Hotel Rwanda and Kinsey and we get let the appalling choices made at the Oscars go without mention.

Jennifer Allen has been along to see the Patrician Musical Society's production of Anything Goes at the Town hall and she'll be in studio to review it.

Earlier today I got along to the new exhibition at Galway Arts Centre which is part of the Drawing in - Drawing Out programme of drawing events being organised by the Arts Centre, NUI, Galway and the Burren College of Arts.

That and whatever else occurs to me in the course of the hour.

Plus of course updates on Connacht against Edinburgh in Murray fiels 'cos I'm interested,

Welcome to the Arts Show on Galway Bay FM

Welcome to the Arts Show on Galway Bay FM presented by Gary McMahon.

The Arts Show in its current format has been running for about six years. It is broadcast on Galway Bay FM in Galway City and County on 95.8 and 96.8 fm and live on the web at www.galwaybayfm.ie between 8.00pm and 9.00pm (Irish Time) every Friday.

Bringing listeners what's happening in the arts in Galway city and county, the show features reviews and previews of theatre, dance, film, literature events, festivals, music and anything else that might generally be of interest under the general heading of Arts & Culture.

The show is presented by Gary McMahon. Gary used to work for Galway Arts Centre, Macnas, even Druid at one time and has a failed career as an actor behind him.

The mission statement of the Arts Show is simple: we don't have one. BUT, just because it's not on BBC Radio 4, NPR or even on a National Station here in Ireland doesn't mean it shouldn't be interesting, lively or informative. It's geared to a general audience who might have an interest in the arts. It presumes nothing of its audience except that it's no dumber than the people presenting it.

We'll try to upadate this blog with running orders for each week's show and to list the music we play on it.
